Unique New Business in Ponoka
Harry and I, along with our 5 children, moved from the Fraser Valley to Ponoka 21 years ago, making a living in the cattle industry. Late last year, an opportunity arose for us to fulfill the dream that began many years earlier of starting a European grocery store. With determination, and a lot of prayer, so began the MAKKINGA MARKET on January 16, 2019.
This is a small grocery store stocked with European groceries arriving on containers shipped directly from Holland. The intention is to supply groceries that you can’t find in a regular grocery store. Our shelves are filled with soup mixes, spices, cookies, teas, candy, bulk candy, varieties of gouda cheeses, giftware, cards, and more. We will make party platters on request, and we sell gift baskets premade for your convenience, or as requested.
The popular European Senseo single serve coffee machines, and the (plastic free) pods that go with these machines are sold in store. In fact, Harry and I recently became the only Canadian distributors of these coffee machines! You are welcome to come into our store to sample this delicious coffee for yourself!
We are thrilled to now have varieties of dried sausage links hanging up and filling the store with a wonderful smoked meat aroma. We’ve had do a bit of travelling to find dried sausage that we felt would fit our clients pallets. Our family had the “job” of taste testing and recording their favorites, and we narrowed it down to the ones you’ll now find in the store.
Be sure to check us out on Facebook to see the requested new items, or to see the posts of homemade dishes made with ingredients found in store. Our hope is that customers don’t think they have to be from European decent to shop at the MAKKINGA MARKET. We have many born and raised Albertans become regular customers, who say there is something here for anyone. Many times we have heard people walking in the store saying they have just discovered a hidden gem, and some say there is more variety of goods here than in Holland!
As we head into the winter and Christmas season, we are getting prepared to fill the shelves with traditional foods of Europe. You will be warmly greeted by myself (Elaine) or by either one of our happy and helpful ladies Sita or Brenda, for whom we are so incredibly thankful to have on board! Owning and managing this store for the past 10 months has been challenging, rewarding and fun. No regrets. We have had a lot of support, help, and encouragement from our family for which we are also incredibly thankful! We would like we thank this great community who supports us, and we hope you’ll stop by for a little taste of Europe.
